Starbucks Bistro Box Review

Sun Sentinel:

The product: Starbucks Bistro Boxes

The pitch: Each snack size or entree size box has less than 500 calories. Among the entrees are Sesame noodles and Chipotle chicken wraps and Salumi & Cheese. Snack box varieties include Chicken & hummus and Cheese & fruit.

The price: $4.95-$5.95 for snack size and $6.95-$7.95 for entrees.

The pros: Grab-and-go-food has never tasted as fresh and big flavored as in these boxes, introduced earlier this week. We tried two of the entree boxes and were impressed with the variety. The Sesame Noodle box (350 calories) had noodles in peanut dressing tossed with broccoli, carrots, peppers and sugar snap peas. A separate container held cucumber carrot salad and another held baked tofu. There was a bag of crunchy sesame peanuts and a square of Starbucks dark chocolate. “You don’t feel like you’re eating low calorie because there’s so much variety,” said one taster. Salumi & Cheese (420 calories) had prosciutto, salami, asiago cheese, crackers, olives and a piece of chocolate.

The cons: Expensive in exchange for convenience. And despite what I’d understood about Starbucks’ commitment to the environment, there’s a lot of plastic packing involved.

The bottom line: If you’re in a hurry and need to eat, you can’t do better taste-wise or calorie-wise.
