Alaska Airlines Unveils MLS Theme Jet

NYC Aviation: Alaska Airlines on Friday introduced their newest theme-jet, a Boeing 737-700 (N607AS) painted in the colors of the Portland Timbers MLS soccer team.

The paint scheme, which features the logo and colors of Portland’s Major League Soccer club (Alaska being the team’s official airline and jersey sponsor) is the combination of two winning designs created by Paul Wright of Portland, Ore., and John Bode of San Mateo, Calif. for the airline’s “Paint-the-Plane” contest.

A crew of 18 people spent 16 days and 130 gallons of paint, about 4,500 sheets of sandpaper and 51,000 feet of masking tape to paint the 110-foot-long airliner.

Anyone wearing a Portland Timbers jersey will be granted early boarding privileges on all Alaska flights out of Portland International Airport throughout the 2011 season.
