Hotels Extend Gas Card Offers

USAToday: Still considering a road trip this summer or fall?

If so, it's worth checking if your favorite hotel chain or your ultimate destination is willing to subsidize your gas bill. Some hotels have extended their summer gas-card deals past Labor Day. The deals vary.

Starwood's Aloft, Element, and Four Points by Sheraton chains offered travelers help with gas earlier this summer, but you had to book by July 31.

Examples of still-current deals:

Red Roof: The budget chain's locations in Chicago and Detroit have extended their gas-card deal due to popularity. Guests can receive up to $40 in gas cards. The Chicago deal is now valid through Sept. 9th, and the Detroit deal through Sept. 17th.

Embassy Suites: Participating hotels in nine states including Arizona, Nevada, California, Massachusetts and Texas are offering gas gift cards for stays between through Dec. 31. At the chain's locations in Southern California, for instance, guests receive a $10 gas card for each night you stay, up to three nights.

Panama City Beach, Fla: Several hotels here are offering gas breaks as part of Panama City Beach's "Giving Tanks" promo, which lasts until Sept. 9. The Marriott in Panama City, for example, offers $50 for a stay of four nights or more, or $100 for a stay of seven nights or more.

Note: As with any promo, it's always worth comparing the "deal" rate against a regular rate. Hotel loyalty point expert Ric Garrido examined the Embassy Suites promo last month and noted that most of the hotels he checked required a higher rate that "completely negates the value of the gas card."
