The correct answer: New York, the most expensive hotel market in the USA.
The Big Apple leads the USA in having the most hotel rooms under construction, despite a whopping 36% decrease in number of rooms under construction a year ago. Currently, New York has 6,763 hotel rooms under construction, the March STR/McGraw Hill Construction Dodge Pipeline Report says.
The next hotel set to move out of the construction phase is the 316-room Dream Downtown hotel, affiliated with Wyndham, which is set to open in May. In June, the London-based pod hotel operator, Yotel, is set to open its first U.S. hotel with 669 small rooms.
About a third of the rooms under construction in New York are not affiliated with a brand, according to Smith Travel Research.
No. 2-ranked Orlando showed the biggest year-over-year increase. Its 2,636 rooms under construction represents a 108% increase vs. March 2010. Here, hotels under construction now include the 400-room Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek, which is expected to open in October. In the summer of 2012, Disney's expected to start opening its 1,984-room Art of Animation Resort.

- Washington D.C.: 2,619 rooms
- Dallas: 1,475 rooms
- Miami-Hialeah: 1,026 rooms
- Philadelphia: 799 rooms
- Chicago: 778 rooms
- Atlanta: 691 rooms
- Houston: 680 rooms
- Nashville: 446 rooms
Of the 1,445 rooms under construction in Dallas, 1,000 of them will be in high-end properties such the Omni Dallas Convention Center, which is scheduled to open in March 2012.
What about Las Vegas? Sin City has just 96 rooms under construction, the report says.
The recession killed a number of hotel projects across the USA, resulting in an 8.2% drop in the number of rooms in the total pipeline vs. March 2010. "Developers continue to focus on key U.S. destination markets for growth," Lana Yoshii, STR's VP of content management, said in a statement.
